BREATH IN THE FRAGRANCE

Breathe In The Fragrance premiered in June 2023 for the Queer Arts Festival.
In Breathe In The Fragrance, we literally and figuratively ask folks to pause, to stop and smell the Mogra (Jasmine).

This work celebrates nostalgia through hyper specific resonances sourced from Bharatanatyam that lives in my body and from ritualistic resonances that linger in my memories from India and include:

Mogra, Indian Jasmine that is used in festivals, rituals and celebrations all over India. We create a sensory ritual with Mogra; of smell, of taste, of touch and of sound.

“Brown Queerness” sourced from my lived experiences of growing up queer in India and celebrating the aesthetics of iconic Indian movie stars like Rekha, who offered us a rich fantasy world to inhabit.

The dance language and music, traditional Bharatanatyam and Carnatik music.

SACRED SACRILEGIOUS

“Sacred” and “Sacrilege” are offered as invitations to the viewer’s gaze.

sacred EARTH: birth, search, offer, rhythm

sacred WATER: submit, surrender, merge, rhythm

sacred FIRE: burn, cleanse, emerge, rhythm

sacred AIR/SPACE: stillness, nothingness, RHYTHM

Sacred Sacrilegious questions the gaze on sacredness as a ritualistic performance and explores the body as an offering through queer erotic rituals to the five elements in accordance with Hindu philosophy (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space).
The body inhabits an idea or a feeling through a series of visuals as it moves through virtual landscapes. Each visual carries something deeper within it. The viewer’s gaze is invited to stand on the edge of the visuals and make their own experience with what’s being offered.
